Cybersecurity in hybrid teams: protective shield or gateway?

Imagine your company is a fortress. Sturdy walls, well-secured gates, vigilant guards – nothing and no one gets in unnoticed. But suddenly, small side entrances appear everywhere: laptops in home offices, smartphones in cafés, shared cloud documents. Each of these doors can potentially be a weak point. How do you ensure that your fortress remains impregnable even in the hybrid working world?

The answer is simple – and at the same time highly complex: cybersecurity must become a priority. Because while hybrid teams offer your company flexibility and efficiency, they also pose a challenge for the protection of your IT infrastructure.

Minimising vulnerability: IT security as a management task

Cybercriminals are not opportunistic offenders. They exploit vulnerabilities in a targeted manner, scan unsecured end devices and use sophisticated phishing methods to circumvent even well-trained employees. A stolen password, unprotected Wi-Fi or an unencrypted file – and your door is wide open.

But the good news is that you can take active countermeasures.

A secure hybrid working environment starts with four essential measures:

  • Multi-factor authentication (MFA): A password alone is no longer enough. With an additional security level – be it a one-time code or a biometric feature – you can close the door to unauthorised access.
Encryption of sensitive data: Imagine your company data is a safe full of gold bars. Without the right combination, the contents remain useless – even if they fall into the wrong hands. This is exactly what end-to-end encryption does for your digital information.
  • Targeted access restrictions: Not every employee needs to have access to all systems. Principle of least privilege: Giving people only what they really need minimises potential damage in an emergency.
  • Secure IT environments: Whether in the home office or on the road, company laptops should be equipped with VPNs, firewalls and the latest security updates as standard. An unprotected device is like an unlocked safe in the middle of the street.

Cybersecurity is not an IT issue – it’s a matter for senior management!

Technology alone is not enough. You need a clear strategy, regular awareness campaigns and a security culture that is exemplified by senior management. Because let’s be honest: if top management doesn’t take cyber security seriously, neither will the rest of the company.

So my question to you is: how secure is your company really? Are there gaps in your security strategy? Are all employees adequately trained? And how well are you prepared against targeted attacks?

Take precautions now, before it’s too late. Because in the hybrid world of work, cyber security is not an option – it’s an absolute necessity.
